The Department Of Marathi was established in 1927. Over the years, the Department has had several luminaries, as professors and students, who have made their mark not only in the Literary field but in the Society also. Many of its former students have been leading lights in the various fields like Politics, Literature, Industry, Education and others.
From 1927 till today Shri S.N. Banhatti, Dr. V. B. Kolte, Dr. SharadchandraMuktibodh, Dr. Suresh Dolke, Dr. MaltiPatil, Dr. SunandaDeshpande, Dr. LataMisar and Dr. LataLanjewar have headed this dept. in their respective times ably. At present Dr. JanardhanKatkar is the Head of the Department, and Dr. VishakhaKamble, Dr. Nandkumar More, Prof RajniTondchirkar, Shri. Bharat Kadbe, Shri. DevanandKhobragade, Shri. ChhotuPuri, Shri. Sanjay Singanjude, Shri. Deepak Rangari, Shri. ArvindDhanvijay, Ku. Nita Meshram&OmprakashPanchbhaiare assisting him for the smooth working of the Department.
In the year 2011-2012 this Dept. has enrolled a total of 994 students from 11th to Ph.D. Apart from this, 25 students have cleared NET/SET/JRF exam and many of them are now working as lecturers
