The great Philosopher Socrates had always said "knowledge" is virtue. Originating from Phileo (i,e. to love) and Sophia (i,e. "Wisdom"),"Philosophy" is a subject which gives logical and scientific reason to every man to live a successful life. Philosophy not only belongs to every mans external life but also eternal life as well.
Sir John Morris included Philosophy as one of the foremost subjects for study, when Morris College was established in the erstwhile state of C.P. and Berar, in 1885 during the British period. Thus, the Department of Philosophy will complete its journey of 125 years along with the inception of the Institute, in June 2010.
In the institute the faculty of Philosophy at under graduate level was there right since it started during British regime. In the year 1980 the institute obtained permission to start post-graduate classes in Philosophy and presently the institute has been more popular for its post-graduate teaching in Philosophy. Now it is one of the oldest philosophy departments in Vidharba region of Maharashtra.
In this long and chequered history of the department, several government officers, lecturers, and noted philosophers contributed their might in its development. Prominent educationist and philosophers like Padma Vibhushan Dr. Veni Shankar Jha, C. D. Deshmukh, D. Y. Deshpande were faculties and alumnae of this department.
