Sanskrit, the mother of all ancient, medieval and modern languages of India, is also one of oldest recorded languages in the world. Sanskrit covers various disciplines, such as Linguistics, Philosophy, Literature, Religion, Culture and many scientific discourses like Vedic Mathematics, Architecture, Medicine etc. to name a few.
The Department of Sanskrit was among the first subjects, with Under Graduate and Post Graduate programmes, to be included in the curriculum of the Institute in 1885. The first Principal of this Institute was MahamahopadhyayKesharGopalTamhan, who was a noted scholar of Sanskrit. Great scholars like Professor Saraswati Prasad Chaturvedi, Dr.Vasudev Vishnu Mirashi, Dr.G.T. Deshpande, Dr.KeshavLaxmanDaptari, Dr.ShridharBhaskarVarnekar etc. added to the glorious history of the Department, by their research and contributions to the Sanskrit language. Many eminent personalities like Dr.Hiralal Jain, Dr.Ashtikar, Dr.N.R. Varhadpande, Prof. Ram Shewalkar, Dr.RupaKulkarni are the alumnae of the Department of Sanskrit. Assistant Professor & Head Dept. of Sanskrit ArunPawar, an ex-student r awarded Sanskrit PravinyaPuraskar by the Government of Maharashtra for his excellence in Sanskrit studies.
