Department of Home Economics
"To inculcate and nurture a spirit of confidence and respect for human values, necessary for self-reliance, self sufficiency... leading towards nation building."

Objectives of the Department :
Family is the primary unit of the society and the study of Home Economics enables the student to develop the ability of becoming self reliant,self dependent which empowers them to live in the family and the society with dignity.

Activities :
We organize activities, periodically, involving the Teachers and Students, thereby leading to the development of Knowledge, Skills and Personality :-

  • Organizing Seminars, Conferances, Workshops.
  • Extension Activities.
  • Psychological and Dietary Counselling.

Brief History :

Home Economics is a challenging subject which has "Home" as the centre of its study. It focuses on the Home as an important Unit of the Society and facilitates an in-depth study of the changes in today's world. Keeping in mind the vast importance of this subject, it was introduced in our Institute in July 1962 with immense efforts of Dr. Nalini P. Varadpande. Over the years, it steadily developed into a full-fledged efficient Department. The Post Graduate classes were granted in 1981 due to conserted efforts of Dr. Varhadpande. Dr Mrs. S.A.Wasu, an ex-faculty of the Department was the recipient of the State Teachers Award (2001) a prestigious award of Government of Maharashtra. Dr. Mrs. N.D. Sinha is the Head of the Department at present and it is due to her untiring efforts that the Department became a centre for M.Phil. in Home Economics, affiliated to Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University, Nasik.

Highlights of Departmental Activities 2009-2011

1. November 24th 2009.
The Department organized one-day regional workshop on  Guidelines on New Syllabus for Post Graduate Course  . All faculties of the Department were the resource persons. Participants from various colleges affiliated to Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University attended the workshop.

2. November 2009.
Post Graduate students enacted a street play and participated in the Poster Competition on,  Violence against Women",at Prakrurti, Lonara.The villagers whole heartedly appreciated the street play and also asked questions, that were answered satisfactorily, by the students.

3. January 11th and 12th
An International Workshop on,Recession, Gender Equality and Peace Keeping  was organized by the Department of Home Economics in collaboration with Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF, H.Q.Geneva), Maharashtra Branch, Nagpur. Eight (08) delegates from different countries and one hundred fifty (150) delegates from all over the country attended the workshop. Souvenir "Swayamsiddha" was released on this occasion.

4. September 21st. 2010
One day workshop on, "Importance of Self Confidence and Decision Making" was conducted by Mrs. Maitreyi Kale (Social Worker) for the students of the Department.

5. September, October and December-2010
Under extension activities, through the year, M.A. Part I and Part II students conducted Dietary Survey near Khapri area. Programmes such as nutrition education for rural women, poster presentation and demonstration of low cost recepies were arranged in collaboration with Vivekanand Mission Hospital, Khapri.

6. January 11th. 2011
In collaboration with Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF, H.Q.Geneva), Maharashtra Branch, Nagpur, one day seminar was organized. Dr Sushma Pankule delivered a lecture on, "U N Resolution 1325". In the second session of the seminar Mrs. Maitreyi Kale (Social Worker) delivered a lecture on, "Exploitation of Women- Law and Protection".

7. January 13-15th-2011
Various workshops on Zardozi work, Artificial Flower Making, Rangoli and Textile Printing (Tie and Dye, Batik, Stencil,) were organized for UG and PG students.

8. February 14-15th -2011
Workshop on Screen and Block printing were organized for the UG and PG students.

9. March 4th. 2011
A Study Tour to Morarji Textiles Ltd. Butibori was arranged for M.A. Part I students.

10. August 10th -2011
Rakhi Exhibition cum Sale was organized by the UG and PG students.Rakhis were made by the students and the students and staff of the college bought the rachis in large numbers.

11. September 8th, 18th and 22nd-2011
Under Extension activity M.A. Part I and II students conducted a survey regarding the nutritional status of adolescent girls at Bhide girls High school, at village Bhamani and at Sindhu Girls High school, and at Jaripataka, in collaboration with NARCHI.

12 October 15th-2011
Parent Teacher Meeting was organized in which parents of students expressed their opinion about the progress of their wards and also regarding their expectations from the Institute as well as the Curriculum.

13. December 7th-2011
A lecture on "Pre-Marital Counselling" by Mrs. Anupama Gadkari (Psychologist) was arranged for the students.

14. December 8th-2011
A lecture on "Awareness Regarding Marital Laws" by Adv. Padma Chandekar was arranged for the students. This programme was organized in collaboration with Women's Cell, Prevention of Sexual Harassment committee of the Institute and Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF, H.Q.Geneva), Maharashtra Branch, Nagpur.

15. December 10th-13th-2011
Poster Presentation on "Violence against Women and Female Foeticide", was organized by the students of N.S.S. Unit of the Department. Mrs. Prabhavati Oza, Minister, Women Welfare, Govt. of Maharashtra graced the occasion.

16. December 31st-2011
One Day Workshop on Framing of Syllabus according to Semester Pattern in M.A. Home Economics was organized. Participants from various colleges affiliated to Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University attended the workshop.

17. January 25th-2012
A lecture on, " Fashion in Every Day Life" was arranged for the PG students. Professor and Vice Principal of LAD College, Ms. Harsha Jharia, was the guest speaker.
